A VIEW OF THE POPULAR SIDE FROM

THE NEW MAIN STAND

The paddock area of the new stand was not open to spectators which further diminished the match-day experience. In latter years the home supporters took the southern end at Sealand Road which they affectionately nicknamed The Barn. Visiting supporters were allocated at the north end in the uncovered Kop terracing. City fan Colin Mansley recalls, “The back of the kop was a shrubby wasteland and some of my earliest memories of going to matches there was to go down the back of the kop, collect sticky burrs and attach them to the backs of unsuspecting spectators while they watched the game.” The eastern side of the ground was known as the Popular Side and was covered in 1968. This was a shared terracing with two-thirds allocated for the home fans with the remainder for away fans.
